About Sprague & Carleton

Sprague & Carleton Furniture

Frank L. Sprague and William Carleton founded their furniture company in Keene, New Hampshire, in 1899. First Sprague & Carleton made couches and maple rocking chairs. Their company was an early adopter of the “work from home” option, as the back frames for their chairs were made by home workers and they made the rattan seats in the factory. It was not until the late 1920s that Sprague & Carleton expanded by creating more kinds of furniture and buying additional furniture companies.  Patriot Industries eventually bought the company, though they continued to make furniture under the Sprague & Carleton name until the late 1980s when their factory closed down. Sprague & Carleton is one of the classic names in American-made solid wood furniture.

Styling Sprague & Carleton Furniture

Some of Sprague & Carleton’s most popular styles of furniture were their Colonial pieces made of solid Hard Rock maple, as well as their later Patriot Collection. For a full Colonial Revival space you could use soft colors and keep ornamentation to a minimum. The beauty in Colonial Revival is in the framework and construction of the pieces themselves, not in how they can be dressed up. Let the furniture speak for itself. That said, we always encourage customers to explore their own style. Pair a handsome Colonial Sprague & Carleton accent table with a mid-century modern couch in bold mustard yellow. Or use a dark finished, rustic secretary desk as an unexpected display for your finer dishes. Whatever your taste, a piece from Sprague & Carleton will bring quality and elegance.
