The four men had previously worked together at a furniture company called Lenoir Chair Company, which had gone bankrupt during the Great Depression. The company’s name, “Henredon,” combines the founders’ first names.

With a combined $10,000 in capital, the founders set out to create a furniture company focusing on quality craftsmanship and innovative design. They began by producing only three furniture pieces – a chair, a stool, and a bench – which they sold to local furniture retailers.
